HEROKA: The Beginning

Ran away from village at the age of  12, Heroka became a self styled goon in the neighbourhood in one part of Dimapur where brick kiln labourers usually reside. He had a huge body and a face only his mother could love.

Heroka had a kind heart but becomes a different being when drunk. The other night he was walking home drunk and saw a miya sitting on the roadside, looking towards east with his hand supporting his chin. Heroka came and gave a tight slap to that miya and said “Don’t look towards Zunheboto”. Such was him when drunk. The miyas feared him- miyas are Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants scattered in Dimapur for work and business.
Despite his reputation and respect for him, he had to work because respect didn’t come with food. Meeting his basic needs were not hard though, as he was multi talented. He provided security to wine stores, has been a broker since 5 years, he settle disputes in the neighbourhood, recover loans and debts from workers and runs his own business.
One night during the release of Bollywood movie- Sultan, the neighbouring colony had set up a projector on a big screen out in the open for all people to see. Heroka along with his sidekick Abdul went there but with different ambition. Heroka thought that it would bring him good money if he could get his hands over the unusual big TV. They planned well.
“Abdul, I’ll cut the wire and as soon as the lights go off, do the job” whispered Heroka.
Within split second, Heroka cut off the wire and Abdul ran and took the white bed sheet along with bamboo frame and the duo ran as fast as they could towards the darkest pavement only to find that their “Big TV” was nothing but a piece of white cloth.

The story is a pure work of fiction of the author and any resemblance in the name, place, character or events is purely coincidental.
